Royal Caribbean Takes Carnival and Norwegian to Notice

A major passenger problem has been solved by the cruise line, and it is expected that its largest rivals will follow suit.

Previously, vacation meant disconnecting from the outside world. Travelers had limited options for keeping in touch

with their loved ones back in the 1980s and 1990s. International calling was prohibitively expensive,

while domestic calls were subject to a high fee. Texting was not a common practice in those days.

Social media wasn't yet invented and the idea that you could take a picture on your phone -- if one existed -- was still a dream.

However, the expectations have changed. Everybody has a smartphone. In the United States at least, connectivity issues are rare.

Many phone plans also work worldwide (albeit with an additional charge).
