In Mexico resort, squatters make a stand against developers

Unrestricted development has slammed this beach city on Mexico's Caribbean coast so hard that

developers are eager - even frantic - to build residential units and hotels in a rural community.

Residents are fighting police attempts to evict squatters so that high-rise flats may be erected adjacent to huts

made of wood and paper, claiming they are weary of foreign capitalists barring people from their coastlines.

On July 27, police accompanied by the germ fired tear gas and attempted to destroy some squatters' houses in the shadow of a new apartment building with balconies.

The effort was called off when the wind retransmitted the gas to the cops, who withdrew behind a hail of boulders.
